Historical Fiction

The border Books

George MacDonald Fraser writing about the history of the area and people near to where he was born and lived. Carlisle in Northern England, not far from the border with Scotland.

The Steel Bonnets; The Story of the Anglo-Scottish Border Reivers (1989)

A highly entertaining book, Mr Fraser successfully relates the life and times of the Border Reivers in a stimulating and yet horrifying way. One could make a comparison between the Borders of Scotland and England and the American Wild West or indeed the Sicilian Mafia. This book really opens your eyes to a phenomenon of the past which is still present at many frontiers all around the world.

The Candlemass Road (1994)

Based on the real events of the 16th century, this is a vivid picture of the brutal everyday reality of life on the Anglo-Scottish border, a place of lawlessness where raids, murder and terror were rife.

Black Ajax (1997)

The true story of a freed slave from New Orleans becoming a boxing legend in Regency England, told through the eyes of witnesses real and fictional including Captain Buckley "Mad Buck" Flashman.

The Hollywood History of the World (1997)

Extreamly popular book, an illustrated study of Hollywood's relationship with history, the author analyses historic film moments alongside historical facts. Mr Fraser proves has the ability to captivate his audience on any subject he cares to write about, hear writing about the two things he has a passion for history and film, having grown up at the time of the great Hollywood stars and block busters.

 

Other Fiction

Mr. American (1980)

A very absorbing read following the misadventures of an American trying to settle into England soon after the turn of the century. Flashman and his niece feature in the book.

The Pyrates (1983)

A masterpiece of swashbuckling pirates, just what Doctor 'Captain Blood' himself would have ordered.

 

Semi-Biographical

The General Danced at Dawn (1970)

A collection of anecdotal short stories following the latter part of Mr Fraser's army career featuring the fictional ' dirtiest soldier in the world' Private McAuslan, Private McGlinchy, 'fitba' mad and Wee Wullie, the regiment's public enemy number one. Perceived through the eyes of Lt. Dand MacNeill.
